”I am the monster that breathing men would kill. I am Dracula. There is much to be learned from beasts.”

Dracula by Bram Stoker, published in 1897, is a gothic horror novel based on the story of Count Dracula and the legendary lore of Transylvania, which has existed for centuries. The plot revolves around Count Dracula's attempt to move from Transylvania to England in order to spread the undead curse and find human blood.

The story begins with Jonathan Harker, an English solicitor, traveling to Dracula's castle in Transylvania for a real estate transaction. The entire book is written in an epistolary format, as the action is conveyed through the diaries, letters, and documents of the characters.

Jonathan realizes, after strange encounters with the Count, that he is a prisoner in the castle and that Dracula is what everyone feared to say: a vampire. Jonathan manages to escape the dreadful castle, but the horror does not end there.

As Dracula makes his way to England, Jonathan's fiancée, Mina Murray, and her friend, Lucy Westenra, become entangled in the horror. After an exchange of letters between Lucy and Mina, all the people around them begin to feel the threat of Dracula.

Professor Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. John Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey Morris band together to combat Dracula. Van Helsing emerges as the group's leader due to his knowledge of vampire lore and his determination to save Lucy and Mina from Dracula's influence.

And we all wonder... what makes Dracula immortal? And will they succeed in defeating him?

I had this book on my parents' shelves forever, but we had the Romanian version, and I was so curious to read the original story. Well, I think I made a good decision by reading it this way because I felt that the charm and magic of it were based on the language, even though the story takes place in our country's regions.

I loved the way everyone feared the strange beast, the bloodthirsty monster, but I did find reading all the descriptions a bit of an effort. After all, it is a book based on diary entries. I think I would have loved it more if I had the chance to read it with a more linear narrative.

But every aspect of this story makes the famous "Dracula" a masterpiece, I guess. Mina was my favorite character, and I truly feared for her destiny, but the ending was just perfect. Well, except for the gypsy part, and that’s funny... Romania has been associated with gypsies and thieves since the 19th century.

But I think Bram Stoker did excellent research on our legend, on Transylvania’s lore, and I believe that we have the perfect dark secrets about demons and vampires like no other place in this world, which makes Romania special. I think every Romanian needs to read this.

After all, we all believe that every story contains a bit of truth. And we, Romanians, know best about this one...

Thank you for reading my review, darlings!

And here are some quotes I saved from Dracula:

''They say you are a man of good... taste.''

'' We've all become God's madmen, all of us.''

''Dracula: I, who served the Cross. I, who commanded nations, hundreds of years before you were born.

Professor Abraham Van Helsing: Your armies were defeated. You tortured and impaled thousands of people.

Dracula: I was betrayed. Look what your God has done to me!''

''Jack, you are a scientist; do you not think there are things in this Universe that you cannot understand and which are true?''
